"OLD FAMILY FIRM THAT HAS MOVED WITH TIMES
DAVID CARR on the return a la mode of McCain Aintree hero BALLABRIGGS

DAVID CARR writes:
"ON THE RETURN a la mode of McCain Aintree hero BALLABRIGGS
(IN THIS RACE AT KELSO AS DETAILED)

ATR LIVE BRING THIS RACE. NATIONAL TRIAL FOR BALLABRIGGS
KELSO  JUMPS TURF 4.10. totepool.com Premier Chase (Class 2) for 5yo+over 2m6f+ winner £12,512
WIN: MASTER OF THE HALL (IRE)  8 11-8 partner A P McCOY handler presenter?  trainer Nicky Henderson for  Martin Landau and Jonathan Duffy 6-4f  from ACCORDING TO PETE
2nd ACCORDING TO PETE. 3rd ABBEYBRANEY. 4th BALLABRIGGS 2-1
9 lengths off winner.
"Every family firm has to move with the times and adapt its business
practice, be it Sainsbury's, Morrisons or the McCains. Things were done
very differently in the founding years of the concern that is now firmly
established as the leading purveyor of Grand National winners in the
north - west.

"There was no wrapping Red Rum in cotton wool after his Aintree
triumph back in 1973 in order to 'preserve his mark' . A racehorse
was for racing and he raced plenty in 1973 - 74, starting off as early
as September, winning four times and finishing second in the Hennessy.

And it did him no harm back at Aintree where he defied top weight of
12 stone and saw off Gold Cup winner L'Escargot.
"To be fair, Ginger McCain took it easy with him after that and it
wa s a whole three weeks before Rummy was sent up to Ayr to carry
the small matter of 11st 13lb to victory in the Scottish National.
"But the 21st century National is a different sort of test. Not a race
with a lopsided field full of outsiders tackling fences so unusual that
a course specialist was pretty much sure to go well whatever his weight.
"There was no wrapping Red Rum in cotton wool after his Aintree triumph
back in 1973 in order to 'preserve his mark' . A racehorse was for racing and
he raced plenty in 1973 - 74, starting off as early as September, winning
four times and finishing second in the Hennessy. And it did him no harmback at Aintree where he defied top weight of 12 stone and saw off Gold Cup
winner L'Escargot.

"But the 21st century National is a different sort of test. Not a race with a
lopsided field full of outsiders tackling fences so unusual that a course
specialist was pretty much sure to go well whatever his weight.

"Rather it is an ultra - competitive handicap with 40 potential winners
generally racing a shade faster thanks to the modified fences. And
modern training practice is to ensure a contender goes to Aintree
with plenty of fuel in the tank.

"Hence BALLABRIGGS reappears this afternoon, fully 329 days
since he memorably kept the world's most famous chase in the family
last April, given plenty of time to recover from his exertions on that
unusually warm, exhausting spring day.

"The Totepool.com Premier Chase at Kelso, in which he
completed his build-up last season, has long been pencilled
in for his comeback, although punters ought to recall he was
beaten at odds -on 12 months ago. "There is one day that matters"
has been very much the mantra for his 2011 -12 campaign.

"David Pipe has also adopted the modern, softly - softly
approach with National hope JUNIOR, keeping him safely
at home until the weights came out, But he now takes a leaf
out of the McCain snr  handbook by running him in the
Download William Hill From The App - Store Grimthorpe
Chase  at Doncaster AMBERLEIGH HOUSE ahead of his
Aintree triumph in 2004.

"It is JUNIOR'S first run over fences for nearly a year,
but the way he bolted up in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir at
Cheltenham showed he is a chaser going places and this
looks very winable, with likely Aintree rival WEST END
ROCKER unlikely to be risked on the drying ground.

"The horses who finished fifth in the last two Nationals
clash in the veterans' chase at Newbury, the 11-year-old
NICHE MARKET and the remarkable HELLO BUD, who
at 14 is just five years younger than his teenage jockey
SAM TWISTON-DAVIES yet was still going with plenty
of zest when unseated at the Canal Turn in the Becher Chase
in December."
  END.

TODAY WE LEARN WHETHER ...

" ....Grand National 2011 winner BALLABRIGGS is in the shape to
make a bold bid for a repeat victory next month in the 2012 Grand National, can BALLABRIGGS follow in RED RUM'S hoof prints?
JMC, BALLABRIGGS is an impressive powerful horse. Ginger McCain brought his son Donald up giving him the opportunity to get plenty of the right sort of experience to enable him to achieve where he is today.
BALLABRIGGS 11 11-4  (4.10 Kelso over 2m6f+ 17 fences. 5 ran) tracked leaders headway to lead briefly 10th, blundered next, smooth headway to lead after last, headed and outpaced final 200 yards, better for race.
After the race Donald McCain said  "I'm very happy with him I did try to warn people he'd  just need the run. He's a big horse he takes plenty of graft and the only way to get him ready is at the races. He had a good healthy blow, Jason (Maguire) was very happy and thought he ran a better race than he did last year. He's not given him a smack." Beaten 9 lengths + BALLYBRIGGS was having his first race since winning last years controversial  Grand National due to Jason Maguire's whip action abuse, Jason was allowed to keep the race, but was given a whip ban. If British horseracing was being regulated properly none of this sort of thing would be happening.
GRAND NATIONAL COURSE OVER 4m+  WITH
30 FENCES TO BE JUMPED A GRUELING RACE
Nicky Henderson's mighty MASTER OF THE HALL 8 11-8 partnered by A P McCoy won by 4 lengths at 6-4f from ACCORDING TO PETE 11 11-4. at  11-4
BALLABRIGGS 11.11-4  finished 4th
" .... JUNIOR can be the one to take advantage if there are any
chinks in BALLABRIGGS. (A misleading statement as not in the same race today, neither at the same racecourse even.)
JMC, JUNIOR 9 11-8   (3.25 Doncaster over 3m2f 19 fences. 6 ran) led, not fluent 4th, headed next, outpaced and driven after 13th left disputing lead when hampered last. A deceptive race  as PENTIFFIC (NZ) 9 9-9 partner R T DUNNE (5) 12-1 trainer Venetia Williams looked to be the easy winner well clear when falling at the last, receiving 2 stone from JUNIOR, who looked a pony in stature compared to the mighty BALLABRIGGS.

"....Paul Nicholls can land the feature Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury
for the fifth time in seven years.
JMC  YES Paul Nicholls did win this race again with AERIAL 6 11-3 partner RUBY WALSH at 1oo-30f taking home a first prize of £22,780  but only just by a short head from DAN BREEN  7 10-8 at 18-1.

" .... Alan King can make it three wins in four runnings of the
valuable DBS Spring Sales Bumper 5.30 at Newbury.
JMC not this time,  managed 4th with VALDEZ 9-2.  6th with TURN OVER SIVOLA 20-1. 7th with KENAI PENINSULA at 20-1.
" .... Age is just a number for the 14-year-old HELLO BUD and
15-year-old POLAR GUNNER, who each bid for a first win of the season.
JMC 2.40 Newbury Veterans Handicap Chase 3m2f+ 21 fences. 12 ran, 4 pulled up. Winner MARUFO 10 10-4.  4-1.
HULLO BUD 14 11-1 4th at 12-1
POLAR GUNNER Non runner.

" .... Last Saturday's Winter Derby Trial fifth TRUE TO FORM can
make a successful return to handicap company at Lingfield Park (AW)."
JMC 3.55 Mike Lilley 60th Birthday Handicap Class 3 1m. 11 ran.
TRUE TO FORM 5 9-6 finished 3rd at 8-1. The winner FORCEFUL  APPEAL 4 8-11 partner HALEY TURNER 11-2 distance from first to third just over a length.

JOHN (Greatest Jockey) FRANCOME
BLOODHORSE LITERATE IN HIS OWN RIGHT
"A lifetimes experience to date, shared with the greatest professional horsemen and the greatest racehorses." A shining light on the bloodhorse literacy front that so desperately needs to be recognised properly by the powers that be world wide.

Born in Swindon the son of a railway fireman, his family had no connection with the horse racing world. At sixteen years old he became apprentice to Lambourn trainer Fred Winter and so began his career as a jockey. He rode a total of 1,138 winners, his last being in April 1985. During the course of his career he was NH Champion Jockey seven times.

After retiring Francome was awarded the MBE in 1986 for services to racing. He was a trainer for 18 months before becoming a TV presenterfor Channel 4's horse racing broadcasts. Like another former jockey, Dick Francis, Francome has taken to writing works of fiction. His books have featured on the bestseller lists. http://www.amazon.co.uk/John-Francome/e/B001H6GYLU/ref=ntt_dp_epwbk_0

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

RACING POST REPORT FRIDAY MARCH 2nd 2012
TOM BOYLE "HORSEMAN'S GROUP (HG) FURY OVER LEVY DISCUSSIONS
"THE HORSEMAN'S GROUP has branded levy talks between the three
biggest racecourse groups and major bookmakers unacceptable and
accused Racecourse Association members of working against racing's interests.
"The discussions, revealed  by the Racing Post on Sunday (26.02.2012)
are aimed at ending the sport's reliance on thelevy as the government seeks to remove itself from racing's funding mechanism and bring off-shore betting under the Gambling Commission licensing structures.

"The HG believes it is being excluded from the debate and in an open letter to
Ian Barlow of the RCA, chairman Paul Dixon said the talks were fuelled by "vested interests" and he accused the RCA of working to present his members with a "fait accompli".

"Dixon wrote: 'secret meetings and agreements cobbled together by a couple of vested interests is no way for an industry of this importance to proceed, however much the major bookmakers might prefer it.

"This type of unilateral action by racecourses is unacceptable , coming - as it does - in the middle of a process which is supposed to end up with the commercial elements of our sport being led jointly by you, the racecourses, and us, the Horseman's Group.

"The major racecourses should not, Dixon said, be taking part in any negotiations " if racing is to achieve the best deal possible".

"The racecourses' main negotiation tool with bookmakers, said Dixon, was the size of the fixture list.  "Uniquely among those involved in racing, the racecourses' declared point of view -  for their own commercial reasons - is that, broadly, the larger the fixture list, the better, not least because they get paid more in media rights fees for every race they stage ."

"Dixon added: "Your members are - in business  terminology - conflicted, owing to the hugely significant commercial negotiations they have with bookmakers."

"Representatives of William Hill, Coral and Ladbrokes have held discussions with their counterparts  at Arena Leisure, Jockey Club Racecourses and Northern Racing on a proposal to continue the levy on the lines of the current scheme, but for longer than 12 months.

"A three - to - five - year deal could see bookmakers guarantee £75 million in the first year rising to £85m in the final years. Meanwhile, the two parties would work on fixture lists and a racing programme designed to maximise racing's return from betting.

"While Dixon said the HG wanted to see the shortcomings of the levy system addressed and the process of determining it less cumbersome, he added: "That does not, though, mean that the Horseman's Group is going to accept its members' main revenue stream being determined behind its back by other vested interests." END

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
C4 WAR HORSE: THE REAL GRIM STORY
 SUNDAY MARCH 4th FROM 8.00pm to  9pm.
HISTORY Fans and (older) children will be interested in the history behind the book/play/film about horses in the first World War, but it does get gruesome, with a sad coda on the postwar fate of the horses. More inspirational is the tale of one thoroughbred called WARRIOR and his part in key cavalry charges, which weren't the anachronism you might think.
But only two per cent of war horses were in the cavalry; the rest were draft horses whose working lives hardly bear thinking about, though the program makes us try. Along the way there are vivid accounts of battles, an explanation of why cavalrymen used straight sword, and insight into a very nasty weapon called a caltrop.
WAR HORSE THE REAL STORY
Archive footage and rare testimony tell the poignant stories of some of the million British horses that served during the First World War. A call up from every farm and country estate in the land resulted in a quarter of a million horses dying. But their finest hour came in spring 1918 when they checked the German advance before helping to win the war."
Director/Producer George Pagliero.
